Jan von Holleben's Photos

Jan von Holleben Photos

This photo by Jan von Holleben, titled Action Heros features two children supposedly swinging on a vine. The perception of the photos makes it seem as if the two children are actually swinging on a vine in the middle of the jungle. In reality, they are simply lying on the ground, positioned in way that makes them seem as if they are in the air. The boat is the background in in the same depth as the kids are, but the boat is in a smaller size, thus making it seem farther away in distance. The "ocean"is simply a blue sheet placed behind the boat. The leaves and trees are made to look in front of the kids. This effect is produced by the 3D leaves, that are not flat against the ground, but pushed up a bit.

This is a photo from von Holleben's Dreams of Flying gallery. Taken again in bird's eye view, the photo supposes that the child is diving down to reach a treasure chest of some sort. The "ocean" is a blue tarp placed on the ground. The kid is lying on top facing down, reaching towards the treasure, which is also on the tarp. Rocks and "sea plants" are positioned at the bottom of the frame, providing an ocean floor. The round plants to the left are simply placed up-right in the tarp. The fish are probably paper or cardboard cut out in different shapes.

This photo, titled How to Disappear features two guys having what seems to be a heated shootout. The guys on the right in seen jumping back while repeatedly shooting at his opponent. The opponent on the left is chasing after him, gun in hand. Again, taken from a bird's eye view, the two men are skillfully positioned on concrete, the concrete acting as a plain grey background. This assures that the viewer's attention is focused, rather than having a busy, crowded background that distracts from the picture.

Jan von Holleben Bio

Jan von Holleben
Jan von Holleben was born in 1977 in Cologne, and grew up in the southern German countryside. His passion for photography was instilled by his father, a cinematographer. He then continued to follow in his father’s footsteps from the moment he picked up a camera at the age of 13. His photographic imagination and creativity when it comes to his pictures set him apart from the rest. After getting a career in teaching children with disabilities, he moved to London, where he earned a degree in the Theory and History of Photography at the Surrey Institute of Art and Design. He continues to create art and tell stories through his photography using the people in his neighbourhood.

Music Cover

Music Cover Assignment

This is my Music Cover, edited on Photoshop CS6. The words are the lyrics to the songs Atlas by Coldplay, Goldrush by Ed Sheeran and Celebrity Status by Mariana's Trench. On the top most layer, I placed the words "DJ Music, Only The Best Hits." The layer under that is the text. Originally white on a black background, I selected and erased the black, then hid the text layer. I also changed the colour scheme to match colours on the picture. At the very bottom is the picture. The text now goes on top of the picture, the original colours of the picture showing through the words.

My second music cover is a picture of me and my friend Jamie. The picture was taken just a few weeks ago at her house. The songs I used are Eyes Open by Taylor Swift, and Invincible by Hedley.

This is a picture of me in front of the Big Ben in London, England. I went on a trip to London and Paris last summer with my family. The songs I used are The City by Ed Sheeran and Viva La Vida by coldplay. I used both of these songs because both talk about/mention Europe and/or London in some way.

Friday Photos

Friday Photo #1- Black And White Photography

This is my first Friday Photo: black and white photography. I chose this photo from the Internet because:
- This is a picture of New York. I went to New York for the first time when I was little and it is one of my favourite places to go. I think one of the main reasons I chose this is because next summer, I may be going to New York, and I am really excited.
- I really liked how the buildings are reflected on the water, and how the lights really shine. I also like the positioning of the bridge running across the top of the picture.

Friday Photo #2- Find Something Blue

This is my second Friday photo. The topic was Find Something Blue. I took a picture of this lock because I liked the shade of blue. There were a lot of different choices so picking one object to photograph out of the numerous blue objects was hard, but I liked the locker, so I chose that to photograph.

Friday Photo #3- Find Words on a Building

This is my third Friday photo. Even though the theme is Words on a Building, I took a picture of this sign, talking about a group of townhouses, or a complex. Although the theme was talking about words physically being on the side of a building, I interpreted this as words on a building, or in other words, words about a building. Since this sign is talking about the buildings, I am using this as my Friday photo.

Friday Photo #4- A Light In The Darkness

This is my fourth Friday photo, A light in the darkness. I took this picture at home with my dad's Nikon D7000. I liked how the candles give the photo a warm glow and light up the surroundings.

Friday Photo #5- Minimize the Horizon

This is my 5th Friday Photo- minimize the horizon. These are both photos that I took at Stanley Park in Vancouver. I used my dad's Nikon D700. I really liked the colour of the sky.

Friday Photo #6- Sink Back Into Bed

This is my seventh Friday Photo- Sink Back Into Bed and Notice the Creases in the Sheets. I took this photo with my dad's Nikon D700. I had originally used flash to get the brightness, but the blankets were causing dark shadows that I didn't really like, so I turned off the flash and kept lowering the aperture until the brightness was right.

Friday Photo #7- Seek Out A Repetitive Pattern

This is my seventh Friday Photo, Seek Out A Repetitive Pattern. I really liked how the logs were all pretty much the same width and length.

Friday Photo #8- Find Yourself On A Shiny Metal Surface

This is my eighth Friday Photo- Find Yourself on a Shiny Metal Surface. I went out into the school parking lot and found a back truck that wasn't too dirty.

Friday Photo #9- Go Somewhere You Have Never Been Before

This is my ninth Friday Photo- Go Somewhere You Have Never Been Before. I must mention that I didn't go inside the boys bathroom. I simply stood outside and took a picture. The door was already propped open.

Friday Photo #10- Divide Something Into Three Equal Sections

This is my tenth Friday Photo- Divide Something Into Three Equal Parts. Although I did not physically create these three equal parts, I believe that this picture fits the theme.

Friday Photo #11- Creep In Close

This is my eleventh Friday Photo- Creep In Close. I zoomed in on a tree in the back of the school.

Friday Photo #12- Shoes That Tell A Story

I got these shoes 7 christmases ago for a special occasion. My best friend had bought me ticket to go see a play, and I had nothing fancy to wear so I bought these, along with a fancy dress. The play was awesome and I had a great time, but I never really wore them again.

Friday Photo #13- Winter Wonderland

I was going to take the theme and interpret it differently on account of the lack of snow. However, it decided to snow that very day, so I went out on to the field and took a picture of this leaf that I found in the snow.
